Pharmacology

 

Introduction

The Department of pharmacology was started in the year 1966 under the headship of Professor Late Dr.M.Y.Ansari. In 1980, the department was recognised by Medical Council of India for conducting Postgraduate MD courses for Two students per academic year. Recently in 2012, it has been enhanced to Six Postgraduate seats per academic year.

At present, the Department of Pharmacology has five faculty members with 3 Professors including Head, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professor and 13 Postgraduate students.

Some regular contributions of the department in the years since its inception are;

a. Institutional Ethics Committee for Human (1980) & Animal studies (1999)
b. Central Research Lab (1980) - for conducting research projects since 1980.
c. Drug Information Centre (1984)- An effort to provide evidence based reply to the medical queriesfrom the physicians and medical students
d. Pharmacovigilance Centre (2011) – for monitoring and reporting Adverse Drug Reactions(ADRs) associated with use of drugs in the hospital setting.

 

Recent Developments:

a. Registration of Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) for Human studies under Drug Controller General of India. Preparation of Standard Operating Procedures of IEC.

b. Under Pharmacovigilance Program of India (PvPI), our Pharmacovigilance Centre is getting approved as peripheral ADR monitoring centre. All information pertaining to the drugs & therapeutics may be obtained by mailing the query to pharmacovigilancemrmc@gmail.com.

c. Conduct of basic clinical research in various specialised areas & has been consistent in publishing the research findings in reputed indexed journals.
The alumni of the department have created a mark in the academic circle & in pharmaceutical industries, where they are recognised both nationally & internationally.Two PG students have secured First Rank in PG examination under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

 

With our forays into the newer areas of Clinical & Research Pharmacology & with developing technology- we are making efforts to -

a. Conduct of meaningful research in collaboration with top universities in India and Abroad.
b. Set-up a Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Centre.
c. Enhance the UG & PG curriculum with recent advances in the field of medical therapy & health care.
d. Standard Operating Procedures for the physicians to follow IEC in conducting research, Pharmacovigilance, Antibiotic policy.
e. Reorganisation and digitalisation of the department and its activities.
