General Medicine

INTRODUCTION:          

The Department of General Medicine was established in M.R.Medical College, in the year 1963 It was headed by Dr.P.S.Shankar from the year 01-01-1965 to 31-12-1995, from the year 1st January 1996, Dr.H.S.Raju took charge of the department upto 31-12-1996 & it was headed by Dr.Muralidhar S.Rao from 1st January 1997 to 31-12-1997 & handed over the charge to Dr.Veeranna G. from 1st January 1998 to 31-03-2013 after that department was headed by Dr.Anil G.Namoshi from i" April 2013 to so" Sept. 2014. At present Dr. Suresh M.Chincholi is Head of Department from 1st October 2014.

From the Government General Hospital, where the department started serving the people of Northern Karnataka it moved to its own present facilities in Basaveshwar Teaching & General Hospital in 1989, with 750 beds. Ever since clinical training to UG & PG students is provided in the Basaveshwar Hospital which reflects a perfect blend of service to the Poor and corporate touch to the patient care in general and Superspeciality services at basic and tertiary levels.          '

At present the department has 6 units: A.B.C.D.E & F units, the OPD is managed by consultants of respective units (Monday to Sunday) with 8 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 8 Assistant Professors and 1 Senior Resident.    

M.D. Degree in General Medicine:

Having recognized grand performance of our college and having reviewed teaching facilities available here our college was recognized for Post-Graduate course in M.D. General Medicine from August 1979 till now more than 349 students have completed M.D. (Gen. Medicine) from our college.

At present annual intake are 10 post-graduate students. In addition to teaching & training the medical Undergraduates & Post-graduates, the faculty members of the department teach to Dental & BHMS students.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

Post graduate Training Programme

The Department of Medicine conducts various teaching programmes for intensive teaching to Post-graduate students.

Journal Club: Journal review is held once a week with 2-3 articles read from recent journals and discussed by the staff and P.G. students. A time table with names of the students and the moderator is displayed on the notice board one week in advance. All the PG students attend and actively participate in discussion and they enter the proceedings in log Book with the relevant details.

 

Case Discussion: Case discussion is held twice a week and discussed by the staff and PG students. The case to be discussed given to a P.G.students 1-2 days prior to scheduled time. All the PG students attend and actively participate in discussion & enter the relevant details in the log Book. In the clinical discussion, basic methodology of examination of patient and management strategies is discussed in detail. This helps the PG students to do well at University examination as well as patient management.

 

Subject Seminar: Subject seminar is held once a week and the latest advances in various specialities in medicine is discussed by the staff and PG students. A time table for the subject with names of the students and the Guide to help in preparing the subject seminar is discussed well in advance. All the PG students attend and actively participate in discussion and enter in the log Book the relevant details.

 

Mortality Meeting: The Mortality Meeting is conducted in the department every month. The P.G. students prepare the details regarding the cause of death after going through the case records in detail, and present during the mortality meeting & staff verifies the death records during discussion. Often inter departmental discussion with the staff & students of other departments are held whenever it is relevant for mortality meeting and case discussions.

  FACILITIES IN THE HOSPITAL:

There are Six Units having 30 beds each (20 Male + 10 Female) a total 180 beds. There are Six unit head cabins, Six teaching Rooms spread out in two floors of the free Hospital, on an average 90 to 95 of the beds are occupied. The teaching Rooms have LCD projector.

Since Inception of Basaveshwar Teaching & General Hospital, Echo Colour Doppler facilities and TMT were available. Dr. Iranna S. Hirapur Cardiologist is in-charge of the same and rendering his services.

The department pioneered by establishing endoscopy facilities in the year 1990. In the year 2000 the department again led from the front by establishing an independent
Haemodialysis unit, followed in quick succession by creating and commissioning of independent Superspeciality Branches of Medicine.

Neurology section was created in 1997 by Dr.Bharat Konin upon his joining the Institution as Neurophysician and Dr.Anilkumar B.Patil, with OPD, in-patient and EMG service.

Nephrology was originally started by the services of Dr. Vivek Patil and now the torch has been passed to Dr.Rajashekhar D.Kerure who continues to expertly care for the patients.

Gastroenterology was founded in 2010 by Dr.Shivanand Patll, with Upper and Lower GI Endoscopies and therapeutic services such as ERCP and therapeutic Endoscopies.

Endocrinology was established in 2014 with the Joining of Dr.Manjunath Anakal.

The department furthered its ability to care for critical patients by the services of Dr. Giriraj Bomma a fully qualified Pulmonologist & Critical Care Specialist, who also renders his services towards the Department of TB-Chest which is led by Dr.K.Monappa.

Currently the department is flourishing with 6 independent fully staffed units and extending services towards all manner of maladies.

LIBRARY: Well equipped Departmental Library with recent edition Text Books and Journal.
